Efforts to introduce a new curriculum to the nation’s schools are to be welcomed, but the odds seem to be stacked against the ambitious government-led project.

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) is preparing for a new coding and robotics curriculum to hit schools as early as January 2020. However, teacher training and development seems to be lagging.

“We don’t have sufficient teachers, nor the resources to go live,” says Mugwena Maluleke, general secretary of the South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (SADTU), reflecting on government plans to overhaul the curriculum.
