CIO of the month: Making online distance e-learning fully collaborative

The chaos brought by the pandemic did not just change the face of the way we work. It rocked education to the core and was the catalyst for distance learning to change the way schools and universities work in the new future.

03 March 2021

The University of South Africa (UNISA) was already well on its way to implementation of a distance e-Learning strategy, but found itself propelled by the immediacy of being able to serve its students and save the 2020 education programme.

Behind this strategy is a livewire CIO, Poppy Tshabalala, whose infectious enthusiasm is driving UNISA’s digital journey. Between her efforts and the urgency brought about by Covid-19, the university’s 2030 plan has fast-tracked the strategy to being a world-leading open distance e-learning (ODEL) instituition to being fully on track by 2025.
