Quietly building world domination

Seven acquisitions in eight months. VMware is really going strong.

17 October 2019

Having turned 21 this year, VMware is undoubtedly a well-established player in the IT industry. With annual revenues around $9 billion, profit just under $2.5 billion and a market capitalisation of $57 billion, it’s not the biggest fish in the IT pond, but it’s certainly no minnow. However, it’s probably not getting the recognition it deserves for its acquisition strategy, which is strengthening its product focus in the software-defined world, and is set to propel the company into the stratosphere.

As two of its most recent acquisitions – Carbon Black and Pivotal Software – were both listed entities, this shone a light on a small corner of what VMware has quietly been up to. Although these two are the largest acquisitions the company has made to date, in truth, they’re numbers six and seven this year, and, there were five others in 2018.
