What makes a successful CIO?

Brainstorm’s CIO Survey digs into the challenges and trends with which SA’s top decision-makers have been dealing.

24 January 2022

The Covid pandemic has changed the perception of the CIO in South African corporates. CIOs must use the platform of competence they built for themselves in 2020 to help springboard their position into the higher echelons of leadership. With vaccination programmes around the globe signalling a light at the end of the tunnel, the situation the CIO faces has evolved in 2021. These are some of the findings from the preliminary results from Brainstorm’s 8th annual CIO Survey.

The first point to note from the results was that, collectively, the CIO respondents had less experience in the role than the 2020 respondents, with more CIOs having between three and 10 years’ experience in 2021, whereas in 2020, those with over 10 years’ experience was nearly double that of 2021. A higher number of respondents (17%) report to a Group CIO than in the previous year, indicating that the sample included more divisional CIOs. However, 48% of respondents report directly to the CEO, so there is still a good collective of IT decision-makers from the highest level.
