Putting the brakes on social media

While a recent Forbes article encouraged CIOs to drive social media within their organisations, their South African counterparts are still wary of embracing this communications medium.

Towards the end of last year, Bob Evans, senior VP of communications at Oracle, published a list of the top priorities for CIOs in 2013 on the Forbes website. Second on the list was ‘Lead the Social Revolution: Drive the Social Enabled Enterprise’. While South Africans are increasingly active in the social media space – World Wide Worx reported that at August 2012, there were 5.33 million South Africans using Facebook and 2.43 million on Twitter – corporate engagement in this space has not been overwhelming outside of customer-facing organisations.
