Sello Mmakau, Group chief information officer, Airports Company South Africa

Sello Mmakau is group CIO at the Airports Company South Africa. He has extensive experience as an IT executive in both private and public sectors, ranging from strategic management, projects and portfolio management to operations management, enterprise architecture, business process re-engineering and implementation of turnaround strategies. After a successful tenure at Sasol, Mmakau was headhunted to join the then dysfunctional Home Affairs department, where he led the turnaround modernisation strategy.

In his tenure as CIO, he has won a number of outstanding performance awards, including the organisation’s Project of the Year and Best Managed Branch of the Year; and international awards like the United Nations award in service delivery through use of technology, in 2009, and best designed smart ID card in October 2013, at the High Security Conference, held in Bangkok. In 2012/13 he was voted SA’s Visionary CIO of the Year by Gartner, GIBS, IITPSA and his peers in the IT industry, having mostly digitised business, improved quality services, enhanced business security, and improved organisational revenue.

He successfully led the strategic collaboration project with the banking industry to develop automated online fingerprint verification integrating Home Affairs systems with SA’s major banks, and has successfully implemented the new South African smart ID card. He crafted a digital strategy for ACSA, which was approved by the company board recently, and he is in the process of implementing it.

In 2016, Mmakau was rated the best performing executive through an executive survey. A BCom and MBL graduate, Mmakau has experience in the petroleum, health, telecoms and transportation and aviation industries. He is an innovative, passionate visionary who strives for excellence in all he does. He enjoys soccer, rugby, tennis and boxing.
