Providing large-scale solutions to enterprises means being a Jack of all trades, whether you like it or not. Richard Sutherland is portfolio manager of dynamic infrastructure at Fujitsu, based in the company’s Rivonia office in Johannesburg. If that title seems broad, it’s because so is his job.

“My life in the office is rather challenging,” he says. “It’s primarily supposed to be demand generation: present to customers, generate the awareness and understand and manage things as a whole. At the moment I’m managing pricing issues with upstream in Europe. If the factory wants to bring in a new type of switch for a blade chassis, then they’ll canvas us for whether it works. Obviously we have to have an understanding about how the market works.
