Good connectivity, a cheap rand and a strong talent pool is encouraging international companies to hire South African developers for project work.

IT skills outsourcing is a developing industry in South Africa. Statistics are hard to come by, but in 2014, Deloitte reported that eight percent of global companies polled had outsourced work to South Africa, with a further 20% ‘planning to or would consider' doing so. This is also referred to as micro sourcing, where large projects are broken down into micro tasks, and distributed to different groups of workers in different locations.

In 2015, McKinsey pointed out that although there are huge opportunities, ‘South Africa’s share of exports of services remains small’.
