Education evolved

As digital learning becomes increasingly popular and digital skills more sought after, is there still a place for traditional education?

06 November 2017

When one thinks about online learning, the possibilities are endless. It's education anywhere. Gone are the days when you had to leave your home and enter a conventional classroom environment to be educated. Today, web-based learning and online educational resources make it possible to learn anything you want, in any location, at your own pace and at a vastly reduced cost. A particularly appealing proposition for countries where access to basic education is limited, the rise of these digital campuses levels the playing field. But does the digital education revolution spell the end of more formal educational institutions? Sam Paddock, GetSmarter CEO, doesn't think so.

In many respects, digital learning and physical education will complement each other; in other instances, digital will take over traditional learning and, in some cases, traditional education will maintain its stronghold, says Paddock. Digital learning will prove successful in some respects because it makes education cheaper, faster and more flexible. But there will always be certain people who want to learn face-to-face, he continues.
