Last month, I wrote that the future of science fiction is reality. From invasive and universal surveillance, both private and public, to ‘replicators’ and driverless cars, we’re living the future we could only imagine when I started out as technology journalist 20 years ago.

No matter what the outlandish technological vision, the fiction based upon it could often be categorised into two world views: optimistic and utopian or pessimistic and dystopian.
