Google eyes African startup ecosystem

The internet giant wants to play a role in fostering the next top African tech entrepreneurs.

Being located on the opposite end of the globe from Silicon Valley should not be an issue for tech startups in the age of the internet and fast connectivity, but the fact remains that many early-stage businesses in emerging markets still do not have access to the vast network of funders and expertise those based in Southern California have.

But this is changing. Twelve African startups, including one from South Africa, have been selected to take part in the first regional Google Launchpad Accelerator class to be held on the continent.
