How Cape Town is banking on startups to shed its 'weekend city' tag.

Not so long ago, the Cape Town suburb of Woodstock would have been an area to avoid. In its heyday, a popular seaside resort before losing its beach to land reclamation, Woodstock became an area best characterised by crime and drugs.

Things are very different today. Woodstock is now Cape Town’s indisputable startup hub, if not that of the country as a whole. A process that began with the launch of the Bandwidth Barn in 2001 has led to Cape Town outstripping even the economic hub of Johannesburg as South Africa’s startup capital.
