Motorbikes have many advantages as a form of transport in Africa, but e-mobility bikes are on the rise, and there’s a homegrown movement championing this alternative.

Rwanda relies on motorcycle taxis, to the point that when they were briefly banned a few years ago, the capital Kigali ground to a halt and the government was forced into a speedy retreat.

It’s estimated that up to 30 000 motorcycle taxis operate in Kigali, causing obvious environmental issues, and back in 2019, president Paul Kagame, rather than banning them again, said he wanted them all to become electric. A bold aim, but with Rwanda having become a test-bed for exciting initiatives such as medical drone deliveries, not a totally outrageous one.
