Lungisa – Helping Cape Town work

There’s much national attention on service delivery, but a small project in Cape Town is making it a reality.

02 September 2013

Lungisa (‘fix it’ in isiXhosa) is a community monitoring and reporting tool, created and launched in 2012 by Cell- Life. It empowers citizens by enabling them to submit service delivery complaints easily and inexpensively. Currently focussed on serving under-resourced areas of Cape Town, plans are afoot to expand the service more widely as funding allows. The pilot phase has shown that by providing mobile-first, inexpensive ways for citizens to report on issues, service delivery can be improved.

When speaking to Peter Benjamin and Abongile Nyumbeka of Cell-Life, it becomes clear that the project looks towards citizen empowerment and highlights the current national focus on setting up effective monitoring and evaluation services across the country.
