IBM Viper set to strike

IBM has turned to innovation in XML capability and security in its nascent Viper database server to bite back at competitors – but says compression is the real venom.

After six months in open beta testing, IBM`s latest DB2 database server, codenamed Viper, is set to sink its fangs into an increasingly competitive market.

For the offensive, Viper has some aggressive capabilities, aimed at winning ground from database and storage rivals, including Oracle, Microsoft and EMC.
