Ericsson says evolved 3G cellular technology currently in beta testing will soon deliver a new era of Internet connectivity through local networks.

Forget measuring Internet connection speeds in kilobits per second (kbps) and start thinking in terms of megabits per second (Mbps), because according to the Ericsson cellular technology development group, the local market can soon look forward to connecting at three Mbps.

"Where 3G (WCDMA) cellular base stations using Ericsson technology already exist, faster data transmission speeds can be achieved by simply adding software and a small hardware component," says Thomas Sonesson, VP customer solutions and sales support for Ericsson South Africa.
