Gartner: Master of its own domain

IT executives made their annual pilgrimage to Cape Town for the Gartner Symposium in September. What did they learn?

What does the digital platform of the future look like? According to Peter Sondergaard, head of global research at Gartner, it has to do with ‘domains’, of which he named five: IT systems, customer experience, things, intelligence and the ecosystem foundation. Gartner has long cast itself as the analysts who shape IT and high-level business strategy. In 2010, it dubbed social, mobile, cloud and information as the ‘nexus of forces’ that businesses needed to harness.

It also introduced the concept of ‘bimodal IT’, which involved simultaneously dealing with running stable operations and driving innovation. Last year, it highlighted the importance of algorithms and how a business could extract value from them, which led to this year’s thinking about how organisations were unifying their efforts across the five domains.
