Toxic technology

Electronics are making our world a better place. But there’s a dark side to our tech addiction.

28 February 2018

Our old tech is becoming a big problem: over 41 million tonnes of defunct computers, laptops, tablets, phones, camera batteries, digital cameras, fridges, microwaves, and other obsolete electronic equipment. This is the amount of e-Waste the world generated last year, according to the most recent Waste Crime report by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).

That equals the weight of approximately 26 million average passenger cars, roughly 2.5 times South Africa’s registered vehicle fleet in 2014 (9.9 million cars). Based on a global population of 7.6 billion, every one of us generated 5.5kg of e-Waste in 2016 alone.
