Inside the CHPC

Powering the high performance computing requirements of South Africa’s academic and research community, the Centre for High Performance Computing is also flying the flag high among the world’s student computer scientists.

Tucked down a sleepy suburban street, just behind the famous mountain, and a little further downhill than the University of Cape Town, sits a fairly nondescript government building. From the outside, little gives away what lies behind its doors.

The somewhat dated décor of the reception area seems like many other government agencies, but a few steps down a corridor and you’re confronted with an overpowering hum of white noise. Behind the glass wall of the monitoring room sit row upon row of black metal racks, neatly wired, with little green and  blue lights flickering. This is Lengau, Africa’s first supercomputer, housed in the Centre for High Performance Computing (CHPC).
