Electric and autonomous cars have been in the works for years, and, finally, this futuristic vision is becoming a reality. As October marks Transport Month, Brainstorm takes a look at the prospects of these vehicles in South Africa.

Electric vehicles (EVs) have come under the spotlight in recent years as a way to reduce the environmental impact of traditional, fossil fuel-powered alternatives.

Sweden was the first country to take a firm stance by banning sales of fossil-fuel cars by 2030, opening the door for the growth of the EV market. According to the World Economic Forum, the appetite in Norway is the highest in the world, with nearly half (49.1%) of all new passenger car sales in 2018 being electric or hybrid vehicles. In terms of actual numbers, China sold the most last year with over 1 053 000, followed by the US with 361 000.
