Data integrity attacks: The next wave of cyber crime

When you think about data breaches, you most likely picture a scenario where attackers break into an organisation and exfiltrate sensitive information. But, attacks on the integrity of a company’s data can be even more damaging.

The premise behind data manipulation is simple yet terrifying. Rather than stealing information or holding it hostage with ransomware, the bad actors change it in its place.

“Data manipulation attacks attempt to modify existing data, planting false records rather than stealing information,” says Uri Rivner, chief cyber officer and co-founder of BioCatch. “This can extend to a wide range of targets, including financial services, public opinion feeds and social networks, medical records, as well as IoT and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems that heavily rely on remote monitoring. Every James Bond or bank robbery movie scene where old video footage replaces the live feed of security cameras is a classic example of data manipulation. However, current attacks are much m ore difficult to detect, even retrospectively.”
