South Africa’s banks are widely thought to be among the safest in the world. But like most developed economies, the country’s current payment infrastructure dates back to the 1980s, best known as the era of the cheque.

The transmission of money is vital, and needs a system that is almost foolproof. Money itself is actually just a communication system, and forms the basis of trust.
