Get with the plan

The National Development Plan provides a vision for a transformed society, and a way to attain it by 2030. It’s received widespread, multi-party support. Now public sector CIOs – along with the rest of us – need to integrate it into their plans.

The National Planning Commission (NPC) was set up in 2010 to create a long-term vision and strategic plan for South Africa. It’s chaired by the Minister in the Presidency for National Planning, Trevor Manuel. The NPC’s mandate is to take an independent and critical view of the country, to help define the objectives and make recommendations for achieving them.

The NPC embarked on several years of consultation with all sectors of civil society, including the general public, government, labour, business and political parties. The end result was the National Development Plan (NDP), which was launched in 2012. The NDP was endorsed by cabinet, and presented to a joint sitting of Parliament on 15 August 2012 by Minister Manuel. The subsequent debate demonstrated that it enjoyed broad, multi-party support – something that’s increasingly rare in South Africa’s polarised political landscape.
