Are you digitally relevant?

At the inaugural of the Public Sector ICT Forum, the common message was that digitalisation is the future and can’t be ignored.

The Public Sector ICT Forum held its first event at the Four Seasons Hotel: The Westcliff, Johannesburg, in September, with Peter Ndoro acting as programme director. With a core goal of providing senior members of the public sector ICT community a platform on which to network, engage and share information, it came as no surprise that the forum’s chairman Mandla Mkhwanazi, Transnet’s chief process officer, emphasised the importance that the discussions had to show tangible results.

The Department of Water and Sanitation’s CIO Mmamathe Makhekhe-Mokhuane, and chair of GITOC, admitted that the uptake of technology and digital transformation has been slow, especially in the South African public sector. She added that South Africa was declining in the role it plays in Africa and abroad, however, digitalisation plans are in place and the usage of technology such as cloud is improving. “A major stumbling block is old infrastructure and trying to meet the demand and catch up with the changing world,” said Makhekhe-Mokhuane, “but in order to engage for excellence we need to first get excellence in the public sector.”
