How Eskom is breaking 4IR

Dreams that the Fourth Industrial Revolution can be South Africa’s springboard to global competitiveness are being hamstrung by the failure to keep the lights on.

While business leaders and politicians try to outdo each other with platitudes about the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) being an ‘opportunity for South Africa to lead’, the fundamental reality lived by every South African is that Eskom cannot guarantee a stable or reliable electricity supply.

Indeed, some – especially the commentariat on social media – are quick to point out that our government is barely able to meet the demands of the Second Industrial Revolution. This has ramifications far beyond dreams of smart cities, science and technology universities and teaching robotics to school children.
