Addressing skills challenges through alignment and collaboration

Overcoming the current education scenario and developing the right skills for the country seems like trying to reach an impossible nirvana.

There is insufficient collaboration between the stakeholders, misalignment of efforts and crevasses between what the primary, high school and tertiary sectors are teaching and what business and the public sector – the employers seeking skills – actually need.

“Private training centres are in touch with what skills are needed, especially ICT, but we are not given the platform to describe what employers want and what is at the heartbeat of what such vendors as Amazon, Microsoft and Oracle want,” says Tebogo Makgatho, founder and CEO of Netcampus. “There needs to be a cold, hard look at who, what and where funding is taking place on what programmes and serious effort made to align what is offered with what is desperately needed.
