All I want for Christmas…

It’s something of an annual tradition in the December edition of Brainstorm to ask CIOs to tell us their Christmas wish. Sadly, it’s also a tradition for their wish to be very similar every year – more bandwidth at cheaper prices.

Now that the undersea cables have Africa surrounded, surely the operators should no longer be holding us to ransom over the prices? CIOs think they still are, however.

“My Christmas wish would be for the Cyber-Santa to deliver world-class, low-cost broadband to southern Africa,” says Morné van Heerden, CIO of Primedia Out of Home. “Evidence may point to his elves working on this already, with the arrival of the West Africa Cable System (WACS) this year and Telkom’s promise of 40Mbps Very high bit-rate Digital Subscriber Line (VDSL). But as we stand, we are still significantly behind our global counterparts in this arena, both in respect to access speeds and comparative costs.”
