Organisations across the board are trying to get their heads around what the Internet of Things is going to mean for them and how they can make sure it works for them. The promise of an army of intelligent devices providing actionable information to the analytics team or perhaps new insights for marketing is a seductive one. For Modibedi Oliphant, CIO, Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), IoT in his organisation is 'not even a strategy', but the result of demand from the local government departments his organisation assists.

“The challenges have pushed us to explore areas that we normally wouldn’t. We’re now closely working with Rand Water and weather organisations to provide sensor data. We don’t have a specific product or focus, but we do have to look at everything.”
