It’s all about the data

Security is a major priority for companies. But a security-first approach is pointless. What you must do is focus on the data – know its risks and track its usage.

The phrase ‘a perfect storm’ is often overused, adding hyperbole where it isn’t needed. But in the context of today’s security challenges, there isn’t a more apt description of what organisations have to face. When the pandemic prompted massive shifts in how digital environments operate and reach their users, the lid popped off a boiling pot where dramatic increases in cybercrime and data privacy concerns already added a lot of spice.

Data sits at the centre of this, says Brian Vecci, Varonis’ field CTO. “One of the things that has changed over the last 20 to 30 years is that the real target of any attack is data. Data is, next to our people, the second most valuable asset we have. As more and more organisations mature and try to get their cybersecurity cocktail right, they’re starting to think of data not as a technology asset and not as something that belongs to IT security, but as something that belongs to the business.”
