Volvo EX30: small car, big dreams

The Volvo EX30 is Volvo’s smallest, fastest, and least expensive EV.

The Volvo EX30, specifically the 315kW Twin Motor Performance model that can go from 0-100km/h in 3.7 seconds, the top-of-the range model from the five variants on offer, was impressive, to say the least. I saw it in the metal at the Johannesburg launch in February, featuring Volvo’s signature closed-off grille, although I was disappointed that the media wasn’t allowed to drive it on the day.

As a “baby SUV”, the Swedish automaker says the EX30 is aimed at Gen Z buyers, but in South Africa, where there are higher import duties on EVs, a starting price of R775 900 means it’s an expensive car. The Scandinavian minimalist cabin is characterised by a 12.3-inch touchscreen, steering wheel sans speedometer, and sound-bar the full width of the windscreen – an industry first.
