Dark side of the mobile workforce

Thanks to technology, work has become something we do and not a place we go.

01 November 2008

The inescapable downside of technology as an enabler is that in enabling you to do things quicker, it enables you to do more. And if people can do more, they inevitably feel under pressure to perform.

It`s clear the flexibility, freedom and productivity of mobile work comes at a cost. For those of us working for or servicing a multinational concern, our personal time now coincides with the office hours of the West and East, resulting in our inability to switch off for fear of being regarded as "missing in action". In the rush to embrace the glories of the flexible workforce, we`re forgetting something very important: management`s job just got a lot harder.
