What's in store for the public sector in 2019?

The spectrum auction race will take centre stage as government looks for areas where it can promote investment and improve the country’s economic prospects.

Top of the list of what to expect in 2019 is the Independent Communication Authority of South Africa (Icasa) making good on its promise to license high-demand radio frequency spectrum by the end of March, especially in light of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s statement that spectrum allocation will be accelerated.

As South Africa flirts with a technical recession, the telecoms sector has been identified as one of the key industries that can help revive the economy. A spectrum auction will not only increase the overall competitiveness of the local economy, but mobile operators will finally get the spectrum they've been clamouring for. This move, the telcos say, will provide faster and more widespread high-speed data services.
