Somalia's route to revival

Analysts are more positive as the war-torn country looks to connectivity and digital tech to carve out a new path.

On 10 November 2018, Somalia made international headlines after a suicide bomb attack at a hotel in Mogadishu killed at least 40 people. The country on the Horn of Africa, bordered by Dijibouti, Ethiopia and Kenya, has a history marred by conflict. It has long struggled with socio-economic hardship as a result of two decades of civil war, but there are signs of a determined revival that hinges on the development of the ICT sector and telecommunications industry.

War has taken its toll on the country’s infrastructure, economy and political structure, with the main result being a fractured state held up mainly by an informal economy and trade.
